Huacatay, also known as Black mint, is native from the South half of South America. It has been used for centuries, before the Spanish Conquest, as an aromatic herb for cooking and also as a medicinal plant because of its antiviral property. Nowadays, because of its strong smell and taste, it is mostly used in the preparation of sauces like Ocopa or in the Pachamanca as a meat seasoning.
